History of cocktails

So let’s kick-off with our brief history of cocktails and mixed drinks.

Yes, with the current popularity of mixed drinks you could be forgiven for thinking that the practice of mixing drinks, or cocktails was a recent phenomenon.

In fact nothing could be further from the truth. Amazingly, the first recorded guide on the subject, “How to Mix Drinks Or the Bon Vivant’s Companion: the Bartender’s Guide”, was published in 1863!

So, with a history of some 150 years it’s not surprising that the number and range of drinks recipes has increased beyond belief, with literally thousands of options just waiting to be tried by the adventurous drinker. But please, don’t try them all at once 😉

Of course, many of these exotic concoctions will remain nothing more than foot-notes in the history of mixed drinks, whilst some recipes have become classics; celebrated and enjoyed by discerning drinkers throughout the world.

Among these would be timeless classics such as the Martini, Mint Julep, Margarita, Daiquiri and the Manhattan to name just a few.

Yes, even in the case of cocktails, the cream rises to the top, and a few truly great flavour combinations have found their way to the top of most good barmens’ lists. Why not take a moment to run through our Top Ten Mixed Drinks?
